Two-story apartment comprising part of the main structure of the castle, including the original watchtower. Access via flight of steps from castle courtyard.

Detailed description:

Downstairs: Living/dining room with antiques, frescoes, fireplace, piano, TV/VCR, convertible sofa. Private telephone. Kitchen with dish-washer and clothes-washer. Bathroom (with shower). Central heating. Gravel terrace with flower border, table and chairs for outdoor dining, portable barbecue.

Upstairs: Bedroom A with queen-size bed and bathroom en suite (shower over tub); bedroom B with 2 single beds; bedroom C with queen-size bed. Bathroom off corridor with shower over tub. Central heating in bedroom A and individually controlled electric heating in bedrooms B and C. Access to top of tower from bedroom C. From stairway, access via roofed open balcony to tiny study in tower with single bed (can be used in summer as bedroom D).

A separate facing apartment can conveniently be added to accomodate 2 more people (see San Martino tower), giving full privacy also to an entrance garden.

Description of the area:

Instead of an exhausting whirlwind tour of Italy, it is far more relaxing to stay in one place with excursions locally interspersed with quiet days 'at home', and it is a much better way to get to know a country in depth. Montalto is ideal for that, because there is so much within reach.

Leisure activities:

Italian lessons: A short practical lesson in basic Italian can be arranged for English-speaking foreigners.

Cooking class: Hands-on cooking classes can be organized at Montalto for 2 to 12 participants, preparing a typical Tuscan meal and enjoying it together at the end of the lesson. The price will vary according to the number of participants.

Horse-back riding: On the border of our property there is an excellent riding school and equestrian center where you can take lessons and guided horseback tours (they also have a summer camp for children in June).

SPA: For those interested in hot springs, at 12 km from Montalto there are thermal pools and spa services, particularly nice in the cooler season and at night, for which we have discounted tickets available.

The Polo Club, less than 10 minutes' drive from Montalto, has regular matches.

Golf can be practiced at a half hour's drive, and there is a particularly beautiful course about an hour away.

Wellness offer:

How to find us:

If you are coming from the North
(Milan, Bologna, Venice):
Take the autoroute A-1 going towards Florence and Rome; leave at the Firenze-Certosa exit, and take the road on the right toward Siena. (If you are already in Florence, ask for the "raccordo per Siena").
When you reach Siena, do not enter the town but go around it following the signs for Arezzo-Perugia. Drive past the Castelnuovo Berardenga exit without leaving the main road. Then take the Colonna del Grillo exit and follow the signs for Bucine. After roughly 3 km you will find on your left a sign to Montalto. Drive 3.2 km to the end of the road (of which the last 2.5 km are unpaved) where we will be expecting you at the Castle.
If you are coming from the South
(Rome, Naples):
Take the autoroute A-1 going towards Florence; leave at the Valdichiana exit, turn right and follow the signs for Siena. Drive for some 30 km passing the Rapolano T. exit, then take the exit to Colonna del Grillo and follow for Bucine (see above).
