Holidays in the Country "Zrub Zuzana" in Ždiar (Ost-Slowakei, Tatry)
Traditional Zrub (Slovak log house) built in 1912, recently renovated to include modern amenities, yet remain a Slovak National Treasure. Spacious, sleeping 6 (+2) in lovely natural surroundings at 930m, facing the Belianske Tatry mountains (rising to 2,150 m). A romantic all-season hideaway.
Detailed description:
Zrub Zuzana lies at 930 m above sea level and is situated in the Conservation Area for Folk Architecture of Antošovský Vrch, above the village of Ždiar, Slovakia. The quiet location on open hillside allows walking direct from the front door. On the edge of Slovakia's High Tatras National Park, there is a wonderful ‘away from it all’ feeling. It is a great place for wildlife, with deer even being seen occasionally at the house. 35 km / 30 min. from Poprad and its airport.
The master suite is in the west wing, formerly part of the farm buildings, and reflects its history with original timbers highlighting the original pole construction. Totally rebuilt, this has a large double bed (160x200cm). The walk-through wardrobe with dresser and hanging space leads to the very modern en-suite of twin-ended bath with shower over, double basin and wall-mounted wc. The suite enjoys mountain views.
Bedroom 2, in the original house, is furnished in a more traditional style with twin beds and mountain views. The modern ensuite has a multi-jet shower cubicle, modern washstand and wc.
Bedroom 3 has twin beds and mountain views.
The kitchen has a traditional Slovak table with bench and chair seating for 8 and modern, traditionally-styled units housing the cooker, hob, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. It also has a microwave, kettle, toaster, full complement of china, glassware etc.
The original main room of the old house, the large, log-walled lounge has a glass-doored log fire, new comfortable seating and wonderful views. It includes a modern double sofa-bed, with a good-sized sleeping area.
The utility room off the entrance lobby houses the central heating water storage system and is designed to allow drying of ski /walking clothing etc.
Towels and linen are included, also towels for use at the local spas. The cottage will be cleaned and serviced before arrival.
Suitable for children, and a high chair and cot can be arranged.
You can reach the door of the house by car from Spring to Autumn. In Winter, snow can mean a 200m walk to the door. There are two steps down from the entrance level to the general house level. However, because of the traditional log construction, some doorways include a high threshold (200mm), so although the property is on one level, wheelchair access would be difficult.
Description of the area:
Ždiar is one of the gems of Slovakia. This unique village of some 1300 residents below the High Tatras is rich in traditions, folklore and culture. Particularly interesting is the well-preserved folk architecture with uniquely decorated windows and blue, red or white joints between the log beams, creating a strikingly colourful scene, rightly protected as a Conservation Area for Folk Architecture.
The surrounding area is rich in endangered species of flora and fauna, being part of the Tatras National Park (TANAP), UNESCO Tatras Biosphere Reserve, Goliášová Nature Reserve, Belianske Tatry National Nature Reserve and the NECONET national ecological network
At around 896m above sea level, Ždiar is 32Km north of Poprad. It is situated in a valley surrounded by the Spišská Magura mountains to the north, Belianske Tatras to the South and West, leading towards the boundary with Poland (13Km).

How to find us:
You may travel to Ždiar by car or bus from the East (Poprad / Kežmarok) direction or the West (Podspády / Lysá Poľana / Zakopane / Poland). If arriving by bus from the Poprad/High Tatras direction, the nearest bus stop is the third in the village (Galéria). This is on the main road (67) at the first shop in the village, some 50m past the road leading up to Antošovský Vrch. This is also where we usually meet our visitors who are coming by car, as the route up to the house can be a little confusing the first time.
Zrub Zuzana (house no. 43) is 1.2km from the junction on the main road, and can be done in 15-20mins if walking. Parking is either at the house, although in winter and in bad weather we recommend parking 200m below the house next to our neighbours' house.
The nearest mainline train station is in Poprad, which has regular services from Bratislava, Kosice and even further afield such as overnight sleeper services from Prague. The bus station is right next door.
