Detailed description:

Il Piccolo Nido is in the village of Sant'Eustachio (Montignoso Municipality, Massa-Carrara Province, Northern Tuscany), on the slopes of the Apuan Alps, approx. 300 m above sea level. The house has nothing in front of it but the view of the sea and the coastline, the hills below and sunshine. The house is facing south, and because each room has southwards windows, Il Piccolo Nido is full of sunlight. It has 4 rooms, 3 on the ground floor and one, the sleeping room, on the first floor. It is about 55 m square. The entrance is in the living room, a sunny room with the fireplace and a sleeping sofa (dimensions of the bed: 140x200cm). Available to guests are the sat TV/radio, the stereo and a collection of books (mainly italian books). From the living room one get to the kitchen or taking the stairs to the sleeping room. The kitchen has a "cucina in muratura" (litterally a brickwork kitchen) as it was common in the past. A brick structure lodges the cooking fires, the electric oven and the ceramic sink. The kitchen is well organized and equipped. The sleeping room is upstairs with a king bed (180x200 cm) and an open wardrobe. The roof with the chestnut beams and boards is on view. Moving from the kitchen you get to the toilet or to the garden. In the garden available to our guests are the washing machine, a table with chairs and an ombrella but most of all the view on the coast and the valley. The house is one of the oldest of Sant'Eustachio and it is listed in the Catasto Borbonico (land registry) of early 1800s. Before 1950s the house was a three floor house, one room per floor (this structure is locally called "terratetto", litterally "roof-ground"). Terratetto was the typical house structure of the area. It was made with the local stone called Cardoso. After the 1960s, the third floor was destroyed and the new part of the house (where the kitchen and the toilet are now) was built. Il Piccolo Nido was bought in 2001, and renovation started in 2002. It our desire to fully restore Il Piccolo Nido to enhance its historic value. In 2005 part of the roof was restructured with chestnut beams and boards. Part of the roof and the facade need to be restored yet. The facade of the old part of the house will have the stone walls on view.

Description of the area:

Montignoso is between Versilia and Massa stretching from the top of Monte Carchio to the sandy coast. You can find a variety of different landscapes here, from the beaches of Versilia, to the marshes of Porta Lake and finally the mountain landscapes of the Apuan Alps. Montignoso is included in the protected area of Apuan Alps Regional Park. The clear sea waters, the well organized beach resorts, the proximity to Versilia, Garfagnana, Lunigiana and Tuscan cities of art and the Spa of Villa Undulna attract every year numerous tourists from Italy and abroad. Sant'Eustachio is one of the villages in the mountain part of Montignoso. It stretches parallel to the coastline, looking southwards, it enjoys a wonderful view on the coastline and the valley. Normally 250 people lives here but in summer Sant'Eustachio is visited by many tourists who decide to spend their holiday in this quite place.
